The Best Playlist for Your Summer Runs
Whether you’re running outside on a gloriously sunny summer morning or trudging through slushy snow mid-winter, the right playlist can put a spring in your step, so you don’t fall behind your running buddies. (See what we did there? Spring? Fall? Never mind …)
Like blockbuster movies, today’s pop artists release some of their best, most explosive tracks in the summer! What better way to motivate you to finish strong than an upbeat song that gets your feet moving?
You’re in luck! We’ve cultivated the best running playlist from some of the chart-topping songs of summers past!
Songs to Start Your Run Right
We’re starting out with some songs to set the mood and get your heart pumpin’.
I Gotta Feelin’ – The Black Eyed Peas. “I gotta feelin’ / that this run’s gonna be a good run / that this run’s gonna be a good, good run!” Okay, so those might not be the actual lyrics, but this song is super motivating! It topped the charts in 2009 and has been stuck in our heads ever since.
Titanium – David Guetta feat. Sia. You’re still in your first mile, the pace is good, and let’s face it—you feel invincible! You’re titanium! Keep the feeling going with this song from 2012.
Get Lucky – Daft Punk feat. Pharrell Williams. When this song launched in 2013, we loved the groovy mix of old school and new. It’s got just the right combo of catchy lyrics and danceable rhythms. The perfect mix to get you moving!
Problem – Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea. You got 99 problems, but a run ain’t one! Put your problems aside and let these ladies propel you forward! This massive hit from 2014 will get your heart pumping!
Power Through “The Wall” With These Tunes
So you’re about mid-way through your run. The initial burst of energy at the start has faded, but the end isn’t yet in sight. If you feel like you’re about to hit “the wall”—that moment when your body feels like it just can’t go on—blast these songs for a power up to get to the next level!
Dynamite – Taio Cruz. If this song doesn’t make you wanna throw your hands up in the air sometimes, I don’t know what will. This song, from 2010, is almost 10 years old, but it hasn’t lost its kick. It’s a great choice to help you blast through the next mile!
The Edge of Glory – Lady Gaga. You’re not in the middle of a run—you’re on the edge of glory! You can totally hang on when Lady Gaga herself is belting out these empowering lyrics. There’s no better time than now!
Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton. Maybe better known for their debut smash, Thrift Shop, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis bring Ray Dalton along for this rollicking anthem. You’ll be clapping along while you pound the pavement. Can’t hold you back!
Eye of the Tiger – Survivor. We’re throwing it back for this classic. Best known for the training scene in the movie Rocky, this song topped the charts way back in 1982. If you’re not throwing a few shadowbox punches while running to this one, you’re doing it wrong.
You can see it—the end is near. Just a few more songs and you’ll hit your goal. These selections will put some pep in your step to finish strong!
Can’t Feel My Face – The Weeknd. At this point in your run, you might relate: you can’t feel your face, your thighs, or something else, but at least you’re in good company. This song from The Weeknd became a hit the summer of 2015, and is just the right thing to get you closer to the finish line.
Crazy in Love – Beyoncé feat. Jay-Z. It wouldn’t be a running playlist without a song from Queen Bey! This isn’t the first collaboration between Beyoncé and her husband, but it is from her first solo album. Just make sure you don’t trip over your feet while trying to recreate her amazing dance moves while you’re running!
Whoomp! (There It Is) – Tag Team. The early nineties are arguably some of the best years for rap music. It was hard to pick just one to represent the era, but we felt this hit from Tag Team is just right. When you’re on the last lap of your run, feel free to say, “WHOOMP! THERE IT IS!” (Just be prepared for some stares.)
Happy – Pharrell Williams. And last but not least, this chart-topper from 2014. Whether you heard this song on the radio or while watching Despicable Me 2, it surely had you tapping your toes. At the end of your run, those endorphins will have you feeling happy! (Not to mention the fact that your run is now over!)
