What is peroneal tendonitis?
Peroneal tendonitis is an inflammatory condition that causes pain beneath your ankle. Two tendons run down from the calf muscles
and curve around the outside ankle bone to connect to your first and fifth metatarsals (long bones in the forefoot). They help tilt or move your foot to the outside. They are held in place behind the ankle bone by a sheath of tissue, and slide back and forth along the bone in this channel as you move your feet.
Ankle pain from tendonitis usually occurs from overuse, which means you suddenly begin doing movements they aren’t used to, or you require too much of them each day without giving them time to rest and heal up in between. This irritates the tissue, and your body’s inflammatory response sets in to protect it. Blood and fluids rush to the spot, causing swelling, redness, warmth, and pain.

What are common symptoms of an ankle sprain?
Sometimes injuries are hard to figure out, but looking for these ankle sprain symptoms will help you determine what type of injury you have: The first is immediate pain on either side of your ankle, depending on which ligament was stretched or torn. Then look for swelling. Most sprains involve the outside ligaments, so the area around the outside ankle bone may be puffy and the skin may feel tight. Bruising may appear there as well. If the ligament ruptures completely, you may even hear a pop when it happens. Then it will be difficult to move the joint, or it may feel very wobbly and unstable. Mild sprains may not hamper you too much, and the pain will likely go away in a few days. Others will take longer for the pain to subside and the strength to return to the ligament. A rupture may even require surgical repair to make sure your ankle regains its strength.

How do I know if my ankle is sprained?
- Pain will be immediate. It can be mild or severe depending on how bad the sprain is.
- Swelling will also occur, almost right away.
- Bruising will likely appear and go through a rainbow of colors—blue, purple, yellow, green.
- Your ankle may be unstable and feel wobbly and weak.
- The area will feel tender when you touch it.
- You may not be able to put weight on your foot with a serious sprain

What is the difference between a sprain and a break?
Ankle injuries can really hurt, and unless you see a bone sticking out, or the foot looks an odd shape, you may not be able tell the difference between sprains and breaks. Both will swell up, both can be tender when you press on them, and both can make it very difficult to walk.
The major difference between the two is what tissues are damaged. A fracture involves one or more bones, while a sprain means the ligaments that hold the bones together in a joint are damaged. (A third injury, a strain, is when muscles or tendons are stretched or torn.)

Why does my ankle give out?
Although there may be other reasons for ankle instability such neuromuscular, arthritic, or degenerative conditions, by far the most common cause is a sprain that does not heal properly, leading to chronic weakness in the ligaments and muscles around the joint.
Even one sprain could lead to this ankle weakness, which is you shouldn’t say it’s “just a sprain” and not seek treatment. An ankle sprain is an overstretching or tearing of the ligaments that hold the bones of your ankle joint together. When they and the surrounding muscles do not heal properly, the joint is compromised and subject to frequent sprains, which further damage the tissues.

How long does it take to recover from an ankle fracture?
Recovery from a broken ankle takes longer if the break is severe, especially if it needs surgery for displaced bones, torn tendons or ligaments, or multiple fractures.
An ankle fracture may be a tiny crack in the surface (stress fracture), a small chip that comes off a bone, or a full break that separates the bone into two pieces. Ligament and tendon damage may also occur.
It takes at least 6 weeks for bone tissue to heal, and you should not put any weight on the ankle during this time. You will likely be in a cast for 4 – 8 weeks and may be using a knee walker or crutches. Once the bone is healed, you will still need to do physical therapy to restore strength and flexibility to the joint.
Don’t rush the recovery process, as that can increase your chances of instability and arthritis in the joint. We’ll let you know when it is safe to resume weight-bearing.

What causes posterior tibial tendinitis?
Posterior tibial tendinitis is an ankle injury resulting in pain on the inside of the foot and ankle that can worsen with physical activities, especially high-impact ones like running and jumping. This cause of inner ankle pain originates with the posterior tibial tendon. This tendon attaches the calf muscle to bones found on the inside of the foot and helps to support the foot arch.
When this connective tissue becomes inflamed or torn, it is unable to provide support and stability for the foot arch, which often leads to flatfoot. The primary symptom is pain along the inside of the ankle and foot (where the tendon is located).
Tearing and inflammation of the posterior tibial tendon can be caused by overuse, with risk factors including age and gender. The condition most commonly affects women over the age of 40.
