Children Can Suffer from Ingrown Toenails
You don’t have to be a grownup to suffer the big-time pain of an ingrown toenail. As a matter of fact, many of the patients we see and treat for this painful condition are kids.
When you think about it, it’s not really surprising that growing, active children are at risk. For one, if their feet grow fast enough to outpace the replacement rate of their shoes, the resulting tightness and pressure can push nail edges into the proverbial danger zone. And two, kids have a winning combination of boundless energy mixed with iffy coordination and clumsiness—perfect for smacking a toe into a wall or table leg.
But did you know that a child doesn’t even have to be walking or wearing shoes to develop an ingrown toenail? They don’t even have to have experienced any trauma! Sometimes nails become ingrown for genetic reasons. Your child may have simply been born with extra-curvy nails, which find ways to cause problems even without any outside assistance. Because of this, we’ve treated ingrown toenails on children less than a year old.
Because children of all ages can suffer from painful ingrown toenails, your job as a parent is to be observant and remain vigilant! Your child may not have the words to tell you what he or she is experiencing. But if you don’t notice their ingrown toenail in time, the pain and tenderness will probably get worse and may even lead to an infection. The most obvious signs of the condition are redness and swelling around the toenail. You may also notice your little one avoiding high-energy activity or pulling off their socks and shoes at every opportunity.
Fortunately, our team can remove an ingrown toenail quickly, safely, and with minimum pain and fuss in our relaxing environment. If necessary, we can even perform a partial nail matrix removal, which will stop the ingrown toenail from growing back. Our gentle and compassionate physicians will do everything we can to put both parent and child at ease during the procedure. To get started, call the office closest to you:
